As the Cold War heightens, The Voice of the Martyrs diligently remains true to its calling of serving the persecuted church. The work develops into five main purposes, which have only been slightly modified in the years since and then, only for the sake of clarity. The work is now conducted in more than 80 nations. |

1987 Reforms begin in the Soviet Empire and President Mikhail Gorbachev introduces glasnost and perestroika bringing increased freedoms. 1989 A failed attempt at democracy shows the brutality of Chinese Communist as they massacre an estimated thousand protesters in Tiananmen Square, Beijing. Demonstrations begin throughout Eastern Europe and on November 9, the Berlin Wall is torn down. |

A Romanian pastor prays in Timisoara. As the secret police come to arrest him, other Christians gather around the pastor protecting him from the advancing officers. Before long, thousands of Romanians are in the square protesting the oppressive regime of Elena and Nicolae Ceausescu.
They have no fear as the soldiers are ordered to shoot the demonstrators. Many of the soldiers, overcome by the conviction of the people, turn on the secret police. Thousands are killed in the mass hysteria and crossfire. |
