After 300 years of rule by Spain, Mexico gained its independence in 1810 and established a republic in 1822. In 1917, a new constitution was instituted, making the country a federal republic with a president elected every six years for a maximum of one term. The 1992 constitution granted more religious freedom in Mexico but there continues to be restrictions. For example, religious groups are required to gather only in their own buildings and church leaders are not permitted to criticize Mexico’s laws or authorities. Prayer Requests
