Letters from North KoreaDecember 2008 monthly newsletter

There was a time not that long ago when you could count on receiving Christmas cards in the mail throughout the month of December. Tucked inside, you would also often find a letter from the family recounting the highlights of their life during the previous 12 months. Births, deaths, graduations, marriages, and job changes were the common stuff of these annual epistles. It was a good way to get caught up with people that you hadn’t seen for a few years. You would look at the pictures that sometimes accompanied the letter and exclaim how much their children had grown or how much your friends had aged (or not) in the past year.

With the advent of email and blogs, these letters are increasingly a dying breed, as are Christmas cards. And Christmas emails or e-cards just don’t have the same emotional resonance (plus they are really hard to hang on the Christmas tree!). Actual physical letters represent a link between the author and the recipient; what is now in your hands was once (or will be) in the hands of your loved one or friend. It was this understanding that led young women to spray perfume or to leave a lipstick mark on a letter to her beau who served overseas during wartime. She knew that a part of herself went with the letter and would strengthen the connection that distance threatened to weaken....
